On August 30, workers at a local steel company heard kitten cries in the middle of the plant. When they found where the meowing came from, they were surprised to discover a stray calico cat trying desperately to clean her six newborn kittens, who were all covered in hydraulic oil, metal shavings and dirt.
She was found down in a pit. The steel plant manager knew they needed help and called The Cat House on the Kings, a No-Kill Cat Rescue and Sanctuary in Parlier, California.
"Those babies are brand new, but they've got a loving and diligent mom to look after them, and she is doing an amazing job," Harvie Schreiber of The Cat House of the Kings told Love Meow.
Mama was friendly and accepted help from the steel workers right away. She didn't mind even when they scooped up her babies.
When they arrived at The Cat House on the Kings, the staff gave the whole furry family a much needed bath. Mama was happy to get help.
"She has been sweet and friendly with Cat House on the Kings staff," Schreiber said. The kittens are so tiny that their eyes haven't opened yet.
All clean and warm!
The kittens are doing very well and their mama is giving them unconditional love.
"She feels (and looks) so much better now that she's cleaned up."
It's a mystery how Calico Mom found her way into the steel plant, but she's now purring along with her kittens in a safe place with people that care for them. When her kittens are big enough, they will be looking for their forever loving homes.
